At St John’s College in Southsea, a non-selective independent school, the overall pass rate of 84.5% had students and staff celebrating another fantastic set of results. Particular highlights were the 47% 9 to 8 grades in History and 100% pass rate in Computing.

With many individual successes amongst the cohort, it’s clear to see why students thrive at St John’s College. Tom passed with flying colours, receiving seven 9s, one 8 and two 7s. Tom commented, “I was hoping to get the grades I did, but still felt nervous this morning. I’ve worked extremely hard over the last few months and it really did pay off – I am especially pleased with my three 9 grades in Science and A in Additional Maths. It goes to show that if you work hard, keep going and you’ll be proud of what you can achieve.” Tom joins the College’s Sixth Form in September to study A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

Harris will be joining fellow classmate Tom in the Sixth Form in September after receiving an equally outstanding set of results, six 9s, two 7s, an 8, a 6 and an A in Additional Maths. Harris said, “I am elated with my results! I couldn’t have done it without the support of the staff – they ensured we had everything we needed to excel in the exams and put on extra revision sessions for all subjects.”

Talented musician, Sabina received a 9, five 8s and three 7s. She said, “I didn’t sleep last night because I was so nervous, but I am so happy with my results – I really wasn’t expecting it! I am extremely pleased with my 9 in English, especially as I got a 5 in my mock – I revised so much, stayed after class and got a lot of support from staff. It just proves you can turn it around when you work hard. I have thoroughly enjoyed studying at St John’s College and there has been so many wonderful opportunities. Taking centre stage at St John’s College music events and being part of the Hampshire Youth Orchestra has boosted my confidence and allowed me to thrive in a subject I enjoy.”

After joining Little St John’s Nursery at the age of 2, Jack finishes his GCSEs with a 9, three 8s, four 7s and two 6s, alongside an A in Additional Maths. Earlier he said, “I was surprisingly chilled this morning – it was more nerve racking sitting the exams – but it’s a relief it’s all over. The school environment at St John’s is great and I’ve felt very well supported throughout my time here.”

After receiving an award in Public Speaking, Portia was over the moon with her grade 9 in Drama. She also received an 8, three 7s and a 6. Portia commented, “I am extremely pleased with all my grades, but especially my Maths and History – I really thought I had mucked these up. I joined St John’s College in Year 10 and have loved every minute – I can’t wait to start my A Levels at the Sixth Form!”

Parents joined Mrs Mary Maguire, Head of St John’s College, and other members of staff in celebrating their children’s achievements. Mrs Maguire commented, “I am extremely proud of all our GCSE students, especially in light of the tougher GCSEs, and very pleased with the positive value added. Students have worked extremely hard and our overall pass rate is up from last year – it just demonstrates that hard work really does pay off. I look forward to welcoming students back in September to begin their A Levels with us.”
